There are three stages to Christian maturity: childhood, young adulthood and fatherhood.
As young Christians we are in need of spiritual development – we need to be fed the milk of the Word of God so that we can become strong in our faith.
As young adult Christians we are in need of ministry development – so that we can become strong in our service to God and others.
As mature adult Christians we are in need of leadership development – so that we can become strong as leaders to guide God's people in the ways of God and to ensure that we all fulfill God's purpose for our lives and bear fruit or effective results for the Kingdom of God .
However, the process and development of maturity is not automatic - it involves making specific decisions about how we will act and what we will do in our lives. These decisions are incredibly important in relation to whether we will grow in maturity or remain immature in the faith.
The Road to Maturity, by Pastor Andrew Peters, provides a road-map of the path to full maturity in Christ. It identifies each stage of maturity, the processes for moving between each stage and the potential pitfalls that arise in each process. But more importantly, it also identifies how to deal with those pitfalls and difficulties as they arise so that we can grow into the full maturity.
Maturity means being full grown or developed. It means coming to our full potential as human beings and using all the skills, gifts and abilities that God has given to us. Maturity is a state of being – it is something that we become.
However, there is a process that occurs at each stage of our growth in maturity – this is the path between each stage (what Ps Andrew has termed “the road to maturity”). Our difficulties in growing to full maturity do not occur at each stage of that growth but in the process that leads to such maturity. It is these processes that The Road to Maturity is concerned with. It aims to bring an understanding of maturity and its processes so that we all may grow up into the full stature of Jesus Christ.
God desires us all to grow up to full maturity—to grow to the full stature of Jesus Christ (see Eph 4:12 -14). This means becoming like Jesus in all that we do. It is a maturity that comes through a growing and developing relationship with God through Jesus Christ. But, as we identified above, the development of maturity is never automatic there is potential for Christians to remain immature in this life and hamper their fruitfulness for the Kingdom of God. To remain immature as Christians means that we have made it a habit in our lives to avoid or resist the spiritual lessons God wants us to learn. Lessons that were meant to lead us in becoming mature Christian people.
The Road to Maturity e-book provides an insight into the movement between stages of maturity – it makes it clear what happens, why things change along the way, and how to grow through those changes to come to full maturity and to learn wisdom. It covers:
